Newly Merged AAUW Branches Kickoff  Year with Focus on Women in Science

Teresa Nguyen, Medical Resident at Stanford Hospital and helicopter pilot, will be the featured speaker at the Kickoff Meeting for the newly established Silicon Valley branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) as the branch begins the 2023-24 membership year.  The meeting will be held on Sunday, September 24 from 3-4:30 PM at the Sequoia Room, , Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave, Los Altos.  and will also be available via a ZOOM link.  A social half hour will precede the formal meeting.

Nguyen and her family immigrated to the US from Viet Nam when she was a child.  She grew up hearing stories of how her parents saw hordes swarming the last US helicopters leaving Viet Name, and years later, when she was a medical resident at Stanford Hospital, the sound of the Life Flight medevac choppers hovering overhead triggered a determination to learn to fly one.

Nguyen is a former AAUW scholarship recipient.

The program will also include presentations by the scholars who attended AAUW’s Tech Trek science camps for middle-school girls this summer, and by the young women from Foothill Community College who traveled to Washington DC to attend the AAUW-sponsored National Conference of College Women Student Leaders in June.

The public is invited to join the meeting either live or via a link available from Claire Noonan <c.noonan@yahoo.com>.
